The WHL Finals begin Friday, and for the first time since 2010, it won't involve the Portland Winterhawks. Instead, we get a rematch of the 2005 Finals, as the Kelowna Rockets take on the Brandon Wheat Kings. The Rockets are in the finals for the first time since 2009, when they last won the championship while the Wheat Kings are in for the first time since 2005. Both teams were pre-season favorites to represent their respective conferences, and both boast potent offenses and strong defenses. The Rockets are led by Leon Draisaitl, and players such as Nick Merkley, Josh Morrissey, and Madison Bowey help lead the team in front of Jackson Whistle. The Wheat Kings are a young team led by the likes of Tim McGauley, Jayce Hawryluk, Ivan Provorov, and the brothers Quenneville, John and Peter. That team is backed by Jordan Papirny.
As for who will win, the Wheat Kings played well so far with few bumps along the way, and given their relative youth, this team could be the next team to go on a dominant run in the following seasons. The Rockets played well in the first two rounds, but needed comebacks against Portland to secure a spot here. Kelowna will need to avoid falling behind, as the Wheat Kings are a far better defense than Portland.
Prediction: Wheat Kings in 6
